Interview with Lawrence Gowan of Styx - The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live DVD

E-mail Print PDF

STYX

February 5, 2012 Super Bowl Sunday. Performing Super Bowl is an extraordinary accomplishment for any band or artist. For the legendary band Styx, playing Super Bowl two times, 2001 and again in 2003, is beyond extraordinary! Last month Styx traversed the television airwaves with numerous network TV appearances in anticipation of their recently released THE GRAND ILLUSION / PIECES OF EIGHT LIVE DVD.  OFC chatted with Lawrence Gowan, lead singer and keyboardist of the band, about the excitement of the new release. The interview covers a multitude of Styx highlights, including Super Bowl gigs, and what it is like being part of a classic rock band that released their first album forty years earlier and touring stronger than ever today!

"Styx is originally a Chicago band and the Chicago blues that came out of that city was an integral part, particularly of early...inspirations" tells Gowan. Lawrence describes what it was like to re-record Styx signature hit "Blue Collar Man" in the Chess Records Studios with some of the legendary blues greats. Read the Crossroads Guitar Festival story behind the making of Beatles cover "I Am The Walrus," the Styx single that went on to soar the charts. Styx front man discusses with candor his views about the changing music world, what every new artist trying to break in should know and so much more.

Check out the sound bite sneak preview from the interview of Lawrence Gowan on video and read the full interview right here!

STYX - Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips (along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo), have performed more live since ’99 than all of the previous years of its career combined.  Two Super-Bowl appearances, Pollstar Box Office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company (to name only a few), two more studio albums and no end in sight, STYX continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time!

Grand Funk Railroad Interview - South Florida Fair, January 26

Interview with Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad

January 24, 2011. Don Brewer, founding member and drummer for Grand Funk Railroad, called into OFC last week to chat about Grand Funk's touring work ethic; over forty years and still going strong!  Don not only tours with Grand Funk but is the drummer for Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band! In the interview GFR founding member talks about what it's like to do over eighty shows a year for two of the hottest classic rock bands on the planet. Read about the story of sweet, sweet Connie mentioned in the lyrics of "We're An American Band," what it was like touring back in the day for the band that started arena tours, Don's reaction to rock star reality TV and much more in the interview!

Formed in 1969, Grand Funk was born out of the ashes of Terry Knight & The Pack, another band from Flint, Michigan.  Currently the group includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the hit, "We're An American Band") and bassist Mel Schacher.  Joining Don and Mel are true "ALL-STARS"-- Max Carl (38 Special, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Max Carl and Big Dance), lead guitarist Bruce Kulick (12 years with KISS and credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier), and keyboardist Tim Cashion (Bob Seger and Robert Palmer).

Together, Brewer and Schacher have created a dynamic and multi-talented five piece band that will not only carry on the tradition of Grand Funk hits, but also has the potential to create a new chapter in the legacy of Grand Funk Railroad.  With Grand Funk reforming in 2000, this new chapter in the band's biography is being written daily.  Both seasoned Grand Funk lovers and contemporary rock fans-- discovering the group for the first time on CDs and VH-1-- will be able to see and hear firsthand that Grand Funk Railroad's train is back on track.

“We're Comin' To Your Town, We'll Help You Party It Down, WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND!!!"

The Devil Wears Prada

December 4, 2011 Fort Lauderdale. "The fact that we can write music that makes people move in a way that in turn makes us move; it’s a giant circle of energy and it just feeds off each other...it's the best feeling in the world" says Daniel Williams, drummer for The Devil Wears Prada, describing the dynamics of the stage and mosh pit. Guitarist Jeremy DePoyster adds "We take it so personally if people don’t enjoy the show."

New album and tour DEAD THRONE has most definitely elevated TDWP to stake their claim as heavy weights in Christian metalcore. But this is a band that does not want fans to put them on a throne or pedestal; which happens to also be the theme of the album. Humble and hard working are the foundational Christian values that feed the band. Hardcore metal is the fuel that ignites them in the studio and on stage. OFC met up with Jeremy and Daniel at Revolution Live to catch up on The Devil Wears Prada's epic year. 2011 boasts the band's fifth album, pumped up production Dead Throne Tour and "Zombie Slay" mobile device game on iTunes!

Check out the interview audio with photo montage on video, transcription of the interview and photos from the Dead Throne Tour show in Fort Lauderdale!
